My experience with the Cutera’s lasergenesis: does it really work? medical opinion
Laser technology has been like the penicillin of aesthetic medicine. A discovery that has started a new era of dermatological beauty and skin care treatments. Among them today is the Cutera’s lasergenesis, very popular in the US. Are you considering it? I tell you my experience and opinion as a plastic and aesthetic surgeon.
What is the Cutera’s lasergenesis and what is it for?
Let’s start at the base.
Lasergeneis is a treatment that rejuvenates and corrects imperfections due to age, sun damage, pollution and other factors. It is not invasive. And although it is usually used more on the face, it has facial and body applications.
Cutera is the company that develops it. From the United States.
It has various uses and benefits:
-
- Firms the skin, smoothes fine wrinkles and expression lines and delays the appearance of new signs of aging.
- Improves skin quality and texture. Revitalizes, unifies and closes pores, helping to maintain youthful, fresh and healthy appearance.
- Reduces diffuse redness associated with rosacea, couperose, telangiectasias and other vascular lesions.
- Fades scars post-surgery, hypertrophic, keloids, etc.
- Lightens recent stretch marks which still have a reddish-violet color.
- Reduces active acne as well as the brands and scars.
How does it work?
Well, a bit technical… Lasers perform a selective photothermolysis. That is, they target one or other structures of the skin depending on the exposure time, the energy level and the wavelength of the light they emit (the size, let’s say).
The Genesis laser is a YAG neodymium laser 1064nm high intensity that fires very fast bursts, miliseconds. These features allow you to produce a gentle thermal effect in the deep dermis without damaging the epidermis.
What do you achieve with this?
-
- Induces collagen synthesis and remodeling. This is how it treats superficial wrinkles, sagging, open pores, scars and recent stretch marks.
- Breaks “sick” blood vessels. The little ones capillaries, that have dilated and caused redness.
- Attacks the sebaceous glands. In cases of acne it reduces sebum, hindering the proliferation of Cutibacterium acnes, the bacteria that causes it. It also modulates inflammation, which together with the above manages to reduce injuries.
Our experience at Cànons Clinics with lasergenesis
The 5 reasons why we incorporated it into the clinic
We have been using the lasergenesis since 2016. In my opinion, a real discovery.
There were several aspects that convinced me and that I have verified throughout this time with our patients at Cànons Clinics:
-
- Suitable for all skin. From young women with imperfections to mature women with signs of age. From the very light ones (phototype I) to the dark ones (phototype VI) and the tanned ones. Normal, dry, oily and mixed.
- It has multiple applications: wrinkles, redness, acne, scars, pores… It can be used at any time of the year and can be combined with other skin care techniques. facial aesthetic medicine to enhance results.
- Does not damage the skin. It is not an ablative laser, so it does not affect the skin surface. Those that are ablative, such as CO2, work by eliminating a thin epidermal layer. They are more powerful… and also more aggressive.
- It is very safe, it does not hurt and the recovery is immediate. It is a very comfortable treatment for the patient. The same day you return to your usual tasks, at most with a slight redness that goes away quickly. Does not leave marks.
- There is a scientific basis behind. The 1064 nm YAG neodymium laser incorporating this technology has been around for years studying (Cutera has innovated in its application). That will always give us extra confidence.
In the United States it is a very popular therapy that already has a history. Here in Spain it is becoming more and more known, although it is still quite exclusive.
We have it in Barcelona and Granollers (Do you want to make an appointment?).
Which results does lasergenesis offer: before and after
We assume that this is a type of non-ablative laser.
What does that mean? Well, it is much kinder to the skin than an ablative laser, so the effects are more subtle and gradual and require several sessions. More or less it depends on the needs; but greater consistency, better results.
I will show you a couple of very nice cases that we have had at Cànons Clinics.
One is a young male patient who suffered from rosacea with widespread redness on the cheeks and the presence of pustules.
Before and after applying this technology:
The redness has almost completely disappeared and the skin texture has visibly improved.
A fantastic application of the Cutera’s lasergenesis in my opinion is recent stretch marks on the body.
Look at this other patient:
The stretch marks have been attenuated after applying lasergenesis. It is especially noticeable in the one below.
How we apply the Cutera Genesis laser
Do you like to exercise?
When training or doing any physical activity, it is always recommended to start with a warm-up and cool down when finished. In this way it has been seen that performance is increased and the risk of pain and injuries is reduced.
The same thing happens in aesthetic treatments.
Experience has shown us that the skin responds much better if we prepare it before and calm it afterwards.
The benefits increase, the procedure is more comfortable according to the patients’ opinion, and possible discomfort decreases.
What do we do at Cànons Clinics?
First we clean and use exfoliants to ensure that the skin surface is free of impurities that could interfere with the treatment. We extend them with a very relaxing soft massage.
Once we have applied the Genesis laser, we use moisturizers to promote tissue recovery.
In the video you can see what it is like.
Can lasergenesis burn skin?
Whenever use as it should, it neither hurts nor burns. Anesthetic cream is not even needed as in other procedures.
However, if you are considering having this or another aesthetic treatment, always go to specialized medical centers (whether ours or others). A bad application can be dangerous. I have seen every case…
What you feel with the Cutera’s lasergenesis is a slight heat. As they once told me: “It’s like being on the beach soaking up the sun”. There are those who believe that it is similar to standing in front of a warm bonfire.
For most patients it is very pleasant.
My medical opinion of the Cutera’s lasergenesis: is it good?
Our experience at Cànons Clinics with the lasergenesis is very positive.
Obviously it is not for everyone. It depends on the patient’s wishes, the state of their skin, whether there are contraindications… For example, if you have open wounds or are pregnant, other options must be considered.
But in my opinion it is very versatile, painless and above all safe. A non-ablative laser with minimal discomfort that does not require inactivity. Resumes the routine instantly.
And as you’ve seen before, the results are great. More modest and gradual if we compare it with other techniques, but still very good. Ideal for those who reject surgery and want an effective solution that is non-invasive.
Some cases in which I recommend it:
-
- As maintenance or punctual rejuvenating therapy If you have an event nearby and you would like to look dazzling.
- Young people who want to delay the signs of aging. Wrinkles, sagging, photoaging… It is a fabulous preventive treatment.
- Busy people that they can’t afford a few days off to recover. The sessions are also short.
- Dark skin (phototypes IV-VI or if you have tanned), as it has much less risk of causing hyperpigmentation than other lasers or IPL.
Patients here are delighted with the lasergenesis, especially considering that It is not excessively expensive. If you come to the clinic, we will give you a personalized quote with the price and what it includes.
Is the Genesis laser best for me?
Cutera’s lasergenesis covers a wide spectrum of needs and in my opinion works very well, but in the end each patient is different. If it is not well indicated, the results will not be as expected.
Why don’t you come and tell me calmly? At Cànons Clinics we have a wide repertoire of treatments to be able to choose the most optimal in each case.
